1.Gather documentation

Most of the time, your school will ask for documentation to back up your request for accommodations. In my  opinion, this is one of, if not the most important step. This document could be:

  • An evaluation from a a doctor, psychologist, or other specialist, explaining your diagnosis.  Any assessments that show how your learning is affected by your condition.

This is crucial to ensure your request is reviewed and taken seriously

2.Reach Out to Disability Services and Schedule Your Meeting

Different institutions may use different names for this department, so be sure to find out what it’s called at your  school and schedule a meeting. This meeting will help you get a clear picture of the accommodations  available and figure out which ones work best for you! I definitely struggled with feeling like these requests  might be a burden, but remember, they’re there to help!

Some common accommodations include:

  • Extended time for tests (from one and a half to double the usual time)
  • A private, quiet room for taking exams
  • Early access to power point slides or lecture materials
  • Modified assignments or a reduced workload
  • Additional support for note-taking or reading
3.Request Specific Accomodation

Once you know what accommodations will best support your learning, it’s time to request them. Make sure  you explain why each accommodation will help you succeed.

4.Review and Sign Accomodation plan

If your requests are approved, your school will create an official plan that includes the accommodation you’ll  be receiving. Take your time to review the plan and ask any questions to make sure you understand  everything. Once everything looks good and clear, you’ll sign the plan.

5.Keep Your Support Informed About Your Accommodations

Once your accommodations are active, it’s important to keep communication open with your professors, the  services office, and counselors (if you have one). If something isn’t working or you need extra support, don’t  hesitate to request some adjustments!
