There are a lot of ways to support an autistic friend, but these 5 simple actions can have a huge impact on their  comfort and well-being. By making these adjustments, we can help create an environment where our friends feel  understood, respected, and valued. These small steps can go a long way in strengthening your friendship and  making sure that they feel supported in social situations.  

1. Respect their need for personal space

Some individuals may feel overwhelmed by close proximity, so it’s important to be mindful of this. Giving  them space helps them to feel more comfortable and in control of their environment.  

2. Use clear and direct communication

Try to avoid sarcasm or figurative language, as they can be confusing. When you speak clearly and directly, it  makes it easier for your friend to understand what you’re saying. Being straightforward helps prevent  misunderstandings and makes conversations more comfortable for them.  

3. Be mindful of their body language and cues

It’s important to observe their non-verbal signals, as these can provide insights into how they are feeling in a  situation. By paying attention to their body language, facial expressions, or other subtle cues, you can adjust  your approach or the environment to help them feel more comfortable.  

4. Include them in social activities, but don’t pressure them.

Invite them to join in social activities, but respect their choice if they prefer to not go. When you create an  inclusive environment, it allows them to participate whenever they feel ready. The goal is to make them feel  welcomed and wanted, without putting any pressure on them!  

5. Validate Their Feelings and Experiences

Acknowledge and respect their emotions, even if they may seem different from your own. Let them know that  their feelings are valid and that it’s okay to feel the way they do. This creates a safe space for open  communication.
