This week CUSP was fortunate enough to be on the SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Utica NY conducting the “Marshmallow Challenge” as part of their first round of Freshmen orientation. This was our first year involved with the orientation at SUNY Poly and we will be returning again next month for the next orientation session.
The Marshmallow Challenge is a great team building activity for both young and older people. The task is very straightforward; teams of four are given 20 sticks of spaghetti, 3 feet of tape, 3 feet of string, and one marshmallow. The challenge is to build a free standing structure with the marshmallow on top within in 20 minutes time. This activity challenges participants to communicate, compromise and work on a deadline; all very important skills needed to be successful not just in school but in life. Students an faculty will agree that the transition into college can be overwhelming. Many of these students did not know each other and with the challenge and the many other great activities for the orientation began to make friendships that will continue into the semester. We had over 25 participants for round one and are anticipating many more for the July session. Included in this post are some pictures from the event.
